We are a beach front surf themed lodge. We offer very comfortable bedrooms, garden camping and new luxury bungalows in a Guest House / Backpacker vibe which means that all guests share the common spaces of the main house with other guests. The property and Main House are old (over 100 years old), the vibe is rustic and intended for guests to spend most of their time outdoors.

You can hire the entire house or entire property (all rooms and bungalows) privately or for events.

The house is fully Self-Catering, sleeps 14 + camping, which is always an intimate, chill, vibe and never too crowded. Camping Trailers are welcome. The Surf House Property sleeps 23 total.

The rooms are serviced daily, beds are made with white linens and new towels.

Common Spaces

There is ample space to hang out around the house; inside the common areas or on the outside lounge, the big yoga deck, patio chairs, hammocks or lawn.

The beach is a few steps from the back door, just a short stumble and you are on Umzumbe's golden sand open to a your very own private section of the beach which is perfect for fishing, snorkeling, and swims in the tidal pools.

Camping

The Surf House allows a select few camping tents inside the garden. There are no camping "sites", no electrical or water hook ups. Campers are welcome to use the common areas of the main house; Kitchen, wash rooms/showers, lounges.

Getting Around

Other than the beach, there are no stores or restaurants within walking distance of the Surf House. We highly recommend a car rental when possible. Taxis and Shuttles are very limited.

Pets

The Surf House has 2 lovely dogs and two cats who are without a doubt, the most popular. They are very friendly with adults, children and other dogs. However we regret we can not allow any additional pets as guests.

A Bit of History

The beach front property has been in the Walters family since 1916 and is over 100 years old. Starting out as a piece of land owned by Lady Charlotte Mary Moor, wife of the Honourable Frederick Robert Moor, a past prime minister of Natal. Together their family owned land in Umzumbe from Lady Moor Road down to Pumula Beach Hotel. Eventually the plots were subdivided and the Umzumbe Surf House property was given to Rich's great grandfather.

The Owners
The owners, Rich and Ali Walters, are a young married couple, passionate about surfing, beach life and this special property. Rich is South African, originally from Westville, Durban, spent his weekends surfing and exploring Umzumbe beach since he was a baby. He graduated from Maritzburg College and further education at University in Game Ranch Management.

Ali is an ambitious New Yorker, graduated with a bachelor's degree in International Trade & Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. They both worked overseas in various fields before ditching their cubicle work life and creating their dream job.

Ali and Rich live off of the property but visit the Surf House to mingle with guests and enjoy the vibe.
